Chicago’s Best Food Trucks

When trying to explore as much as possible of a city, you don’t always have the time to sit down for a long lunch. If you need to get something on the go when visiting Chicago, the many and popular food trucks should be on your radar. Here we’ve listed the best ones.

Food trucks are a popular place to get lunch, dinner or a snack to tide you over while commuting. You’ll find everything from Chicago classics, to food styles from around the world on the street. Food trucks are easily found in Chicago’s downtown Loop area, outside events and at food truck festivals. If you need help tracking a truck down, Chicago Food Truck Finder (chicagofoodtruckfinder.com) is a useful site.

Beavers Donuts

Donuts are popular in Chicago, and at the Beavers truck, you’ll find mini donuts and coffee. They taste good plain, but for $1 extra you can add topping like PB&J (peanut butter and strawberry sauce) or the Funky Monkey (bananas and Nutella).

Da Pizza Dude

Frankie, “Da Pizza Dude,” draws from his Italian roots to create authentic Italian pizzas like the Margherita (sauce, mozzarella and basil), the Polpetta (meatballs), and the more unusual Sunday Morning (eggs, bacon, sausage and green peppers).

The Tamale Spaceship

Come here for delicious tamales. You get two per order and can choose from about 9 different types, including the Urbano (marinated beef and green tomatillo-corn sauce) and the Dynamic (roasted beets and goat cheese with garlic-morita sauce). We recommend getting a side of chips and “space guacamole.”

Yum Dum Truck

This truck specializes in Thai dishes like crispy shrimp, pork & Chinese chives, and a spicy Korean chili chicken. You can also substitute tofu for meat, or get a Veggie Classic (shitake mushrooms, noodles, carrots, and white pepper).

A Sweets Girl

Time for dessert! A. Sweets Girl create cakes, ice cream and their specialty – cupcakes that look like a piece of art. You can’t really go wrong with any of the cupcake flavors, but we recommend the Caramel Café or the S’mores (graham cracker crust, chocolate cake, chocolate ganache, with a roasted marshmallow swirled on top). They also have gluten free options.

DönerMen

A brightly colored, heavy metal fantasy themed truck, DönerMen serves traditional German Imbiss (street food) that combines German and Turkish flavors. Some of the truck’s favorites are currywurst sausages, poutine and the Döner Kebab. They have vegetarian and vegan options, too.
