Where to stay in Shanghai

Often described as "China Lite," Shanghai offers all the function and thrills of a world-class modern city, complemented by enchanting whispers of history and tradition. From the bright lights of The Bund to the leafy avenues of the Former French Concession, it's a place where stories are discovered and memories are made.

A Whole New World

A relative newcomer to the Shanghai hotel scene, the Wanda Reign on the Bund has already secured itself an enviable reputation. Set along the city's iconic Huangpu River and basking in views of The Bund, this ambitious lodging was designed with the modern jet-setter in mind. The rooms come in two distinct styles - high energy trendy and distinguished luxury - both of which feature impressive mod-cons and elegant detailing.

Hipster Hangout

If you like your hotels ultra-cool and a little rough around the edges, The Waterhouse at South Bund is the Shanghai refuge for you. Housing the headquarters of the invading Japanese army in the 1930s, the cracked concrete edifice now serves as the perfect prelude to the industrial chic interior, created by celebrated design couple Neri & Hu. If you stay here, don't miss the chance to dine at Jason Atherton's Table No. 1, conveniently located in the same building.

Architect's Delight

Pei Mansion Hotel in the heart of Shanghai's teeming downtown is a special place to lay your head for one reason in particular - it's the former family mansion of I.M. Pei, the famed architect who designed the Louvre Pyramid in Paris. The mix of Asian and Western in-room design reaches a climax in the bathrooms with oversized Jacuzzis made for (at least) two. The 1934 City Heritage building also cages a jaw-dropping spiraling "Dragon" staircase and a good dusting of memorabilia for Shanghai's 1930s heyday.

Stay Sustainable

Dubbed China's first carbon neutral hotel, URBN Boutique Shanghai offers guilt-free hotel gluttony. The award-winning "design-meets-sustainable" facility occupies a converted factory building and is mostly furnished with recycled and locally sourced materials. Don't expect to rough it here though, as you'll find huge beds, sunken tubs and cozy seating areas in all of the slick minimalist rooms.

Luxury & Style

Cachet Boutique Shanghai leaves very few boxes unticked. The 1920s building in the heart of the city offers a sturdy compound of historic and modern, with hints of nostalgia among the immaculately restored interior. The rooms, especially the bathrooms, rival even the onsite contemporary gallery in terms of artistry.
